Week 9 discussion on interesting concept

Pick one concept from the assigned reading, that has not already been discussed during this discussion week, that you found useful or interesting, and discuss it.

A concept I found interesting in this chapter is a person’s motivation in listening. In being a better listener, the individual needs to have great motivation. By listening attentively, he or she will gain a better understanding of another person’s thoughts. As a result, this helps one find the right solutions to particular problems. There also is the possibility of accomplishing goals and gaining individual satisfaction for doing a great job. In the book, it states that listening is a crucial skill for successful business leaders to have. Unfortunately, most employees mention their managers don’t listen to the ideas they bring up. When this happens, they might think the manager is tuning them out and does not care about their opinions. This may leave the employer unsatisfied with his job, and make him not willing to speak to the boss again. This might lead to a lack of motivation for the worker to put forth the effort in his profession.
In any situation, it is preferable to try one’s best to listen to whatever the speaker says. There are many rewards like forming new friendships, learning something new, appreciate conversations, and avoid making errors. For example, in a school environment, whoever listens attentively usually gets good grades. If a student refuses to listen, he or she might not understand significant course material. By concentrating in lectures, the student has the motivation to maintain a high G.P.A, and make an effort to graduate from college as soon as possible. Most importantly, having the motivation to listen will have great benefits in the long run in one’s career.

  1. Hello,

You did a great job in describing why listening will allow someone to become more successful, whether in the classroom or at the workplace.

You are right when you explain that in a school environment, whoever listens attentively usually gets good grades. It can be hard when we are not interested in the subject matter or if we are distracted. However, it is in our best interest to listen.

We have to remember that going to college is a journey we engage in to give us the tools to succeed in life. And one of the tools in our toolbox needs to be good listening skills as well as the desire to listen to others. By listening to others, we gain a different perspective. When at work, if a manager never listens to an employee who speaks up, the manager is going to miss out on a lot of good ideas if the employee becomes discouraged and does not speak up again.

Your discussion posting reminded me of a quote I read. It said, "we came with two ears and one mouth, so we should listen twice as much as we speak". I agree completely because there is so much we can learn from others.

  2. Hello
I first like to say it was interesting reading your view on listening. As I read your view I totally agree on if people listen attentively they can have a better understanding and right solution to problems. I do feel in today society people have a hard time listening in conversation or even arguments when if they would listen instead of trying to talk problems would get solved much easier. For example, when I have arguments with my friends I always have to really tell my friends to be quiet and let me finish before they tell their side because if don’t then they will jump in on every little thing they feel they can rebut. However, by then they already shut me out and didn’t listen and still argue about the word or little phrase I said instead of understand my answer to the problem. Nevertheless, your view made me feel like you understood where I be coming from. On that note this was a well blog and people who are well listeners do go a long way in life.
